Project Honduras

Project Honduras is an online portal for certain types of information on Honduras as well as being a network of individuals and groups that sees itself as working on developing responses to the country's social and economic needs.

Many of the people on the Project Honduras network are professionals and students, self-employed, working for major corporations or attending colleges and universities. Project Honduras seeks to bring these people together in practical ways.

The impetus for Project Honduras came during the summer of 1998 when Marco Caceres, a market analyst with an aerospace consulting firm called the Teal Group in Fairfax, and Paulina Bendana, a strategic planner for Boeing met and discovered their common interest in Honduras' problems and began to evolve the concept for Project Honduras .

By August 1998, Jessica Villeda had joined Marco and Paulina. Together, they co-founded Project Honduras. They agreed on the name and the mission, and work began on development of a website. After Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras in October 1998, the possibilities for action became clear. By Christmas of 1998, the website was up and the movement was born.

The vision Project Honduras outlines is one of creating an alternative model of development for poor countries based on mobilizing and channeling what is called "human capital" rather than emphasizing the need for more financial capital.

In October 2000 the First Annual Project Honduras Conference was held in Washington DC. Interest in this conference has since grown year by year and in 2003 its location was moved to Copán in Honduras itself.

The 2006 Project Honduras Conference was attended by about 250 people, including nearly 110 individual organizations that work in Honduras.

The Project Honduras website contains information about what is happening related to various social development projects in Honduras. Internet based groups have been added to share regular information with over 5000 interested individuals.
