President of India
The 13th Indian Presidential Election was held on 19 July 2007. Pratibha Patil, former governor of state of Rajasthan, a nominee of the ruling United Progressive Alliance, won the elections with a huge majority. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, current Vice-President of India, also filed his nomination as an independent candidate. Shekhawat has received backing by National Democratic Alliance, a major opposition front. The outgoing president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam initially said that he would contest for the top post only if his win was certain, but later opted out of the race. Pratibha Patil became the first female President of India when she took the oath of office on July 25, 2007.
