History
Pakistani pop music began at an interesting time in Pakistan's history. During the early 1980s Pakistani cinema popularity began to decrease and at the sametime singers such as Alamgir, Muhammad Ali Sheiki, Nazia Hassan and Zohaib Hassan began releasing songs which had an American pop touch. Songs such as Disco Dewanna by Nazia Hassan and Deyka Na Tha by Alamgir defined the 1980s in Pakistan and to this day are regarded as legendary songs which shaped Pakistan's new generation. By the late 1990s Pakistani pop had come around full swing and had overtaken classical Pakistani and Filmi songs.

21st Century
Pakistani pop music in the 21st century continues to grow in popularity as more singers enter the genre. The Pakistani music industry is still dominated by Pakistani pop singers and their popularity has spilled over into neighbouring countries such as India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and other countries in South Asia and Central Asia. Many overseas Pakistanis, especially Pakistani Britons and Pakistani Americans and helped in the growth of Pakistani pop music.
