Al 'Aziziyah

Map showing municipality

El 'Azizia (Arabic: العزيزيه ) is one of the municipalities of Libya, located in the north west of the country, 55 km south-east Tripoli and a major trade centre of Sahel Jeffare. Al 'Azizia is also the name of the municipality's capital.

Recording meteorological parameters in Libya started in the Ottoman Empire (1551-1911). Temperature archives for some old meteorological stations are available in the climate directorate at the Libyan National Meteorological Centre (LNMC).

On September 13, 1922, a temperature of 57.7°C (135.9°F) was recorded in the city of Al 'Aziziyah. According to the annual temperature observation book written in the Italian language and issued by R. Ufficio centrale di meteorologia e geodinamica in Rome, this is the hottest temperature ever to be recorded on the surface of the Earth.
